TLDR — What You Need to Know
- 5 grades of plywood exist from ₹35 to ₹140 per sqft
- If your quote just says "plywood" without specifying grade, you'll likely get the cheapest
- BWR (IS:303) is the minimum acceptable grade for kitchen cabinets
- Marine/BWP (IS:710) is needed only near the sink and dishwasher
- Always ask for brand name + IS standard number in writing
The 5 Grades Compared — Side by Side
Every time a quote says "plywood," it could mean any of these. The price and performance gap is enormous:
| Grade | IS Standard | Cost/sqft | Moisture Resistance | Durability | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial (MR) | IS:303 Type 1 | ₹35–55 | Low (2-4 hrs) | 5–8 years | Bedroom furniture, loft storage |
| BWR | IS:303 Type 2 | ₹85–110 | High (72+ hrs) | 12–15 years | Kitchen carcass, bathroom vanity |
| Marine (BWP) | IS:710 | ₹120–140 | Very High (boil-proof) | 20+ years | Sink cabinet, exterior use |
| Particle Board | IS:12823 | ₹25–35 | Very Low (swells permanently) | 3–5 years | Dry lofts only — NOT for kitchens |
| MDF | IS:12406 | ₹40–60 | Low–Medium | 5–8 years | Shutter doors, decorative panels |
Which Grade for Which Area?
You don't need Marine ply everywhere. Here's the smart allocation that balances cost and durability:
Kitchen Sink Base Cabinet
Constant water exposure, plumbing leaks. Only area that truly needs Marine grade. ₹120–140/sqft.
All Other Kitchen Cabinets
Steam, humidity, occasional splashes. BWR handles this easily for 12–15 years. ₹85–110/sqft.
Bedroom Wardrobes
Bangalore humidity is enough to warrant BWR over commercial. Prevents warping. ₹85–110/sqft.
Loft Storage / Study Units
Dry, elevated, no water exposure. Commercial grade is fine here. Save ₹30–50/sqft. ₹35–55/sqft.
Smart Budget Split
Use Marine ply only for the 2-3 sqft of sink base. BWR for the remaining 60-70 sqft of kitchen carcass. Commercial for lofts. This saves ₹8,000-12,000 vs using Marine everywhere, with zero compromise on durability.
What to Ask Your Vendor (Exact Questions)
Don't accept vague answers. Here are the exact questions and the answers you should expect:
How to Verify After Installation
Even if the quote says BWR, how do you know they actually used it? Three checks you can do yourself:
Edge Test
Open any cabinet and look at the cut edge. BWR/Marine ply shows tight, uniform layers with no gaps. Commercial ply has visible air pockets and uneven layers.
Weight Test
Lift a cabinet door. An 18mm BWR ply door feels noticeably heavier than commercial ply. If it feels suspiciously light, question the grade.
ISI Marking
Look at the inner face of panels (inside cabinets). BWR ply carries an IS:303 stamp. Marine carries IS:710. No stamp = no guarantee.
BWR vs Commercial — The Real-World Difference
Here's what actually happens over time in a Bangalore kitchen:
| Scenario | Commercial (MR) Ply | BWR Ply |
|---|---|---|
| Water spill left for 2 hours | Edge starts swelling | No visible effect |
| Monsoon humidity (3 months) | Doors start warping by Year 2 | No warping even after 10 years |
| Under-sink slow leak | Delamination within weeks | Holds for months (still fix the leak!) |
| Steam from cooktop daily | Surface bubbling by Year 3 | No degradation |
| Expected kitchen lifespan | 5–7 years before replacement | 12–15 years minimum |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best plywood for modular kitchen?
BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) plywood conforming to IS:303 is the best choice for most modular kitchen carcasses. It costs ₹85–110/sqft and handles the humidity and occasional splashes in Indian kitchens. For the sink area specifically, upgrade to Marine/BWP grade (IS:710) at ₹120–140/sqft.
What is the difference between BWR and commercial plywood?
Commercial plywood (MR grade) costs ₹35–55/sqft and can only resist moisture for 2–4 hours before swelling. BWR plywood (IS:303) costs ₹85–110/sqft and resists boiling water for 72+ hours. In kitchen environments with steam, splashes, and humidity, commercial ply will swell and delaminate within 2–3 years.
Is marine plywood necessary for the entire kitchen?
No. Marine plywood (BWP/IS:710) at ₹120–140/sqft is overkill for the full kitchen. Use it only for the sink base cabinet and the area directly below the dishwasher. BWR grade (IS:303) at ₹85–110/sqft is sufficient for all other kitchen cabinets.
Can I use particle board for kitchen cabinets?
Not recommended for base units or areas near water. Particle board absorbs moisture rapidly and swells irreversibly. It's acceptable only for overhead loft units in dry areas. Many budget quotes use particle board for carcasses to cut costs — always confirm the exact material in writing.
How do I know if my vendor actually used BWR plywood?
Three checks: (1) Look at cut edges — BWR has tight uniform layers. (2) Check weight — BWR is noticeably heavier than commercial ply. (3) Find the ISI marking — IS:303 stamp should be visible on inner panel faces. Ask for an offcut sample during installation.
